Pathers get pecked

After a gutsy battle the Police Panthers lost their fight for the plate final to the Valley Griffins on December 9, in the Hong Kong Rugby Union cup knockouts at the Police Sports and Recreation Club.

The Griffins took the game 25-7, despite strong performances from Phil Matthews and "Kung Fu" Yau Chin-wah who respectively picked up a try and conversion for the Panthers.

Captain Brian Yung said: "Our forwards were strong and with substitutions everybody was quite fresh and got at least half a game on the turf. However, the Griffins were quite well co-ordinated and their backs were good.

"Despite this tournament, we are now number four in the league which is about to re-commence so we will get back to focusing our efforts on that."

Meanwhile, earlier in the day the Police Rugby Team won the plate final in their division by default, their opposition forfeiting the game barely 45 minutes before kick-off, unable to raise a side.

"It's great, albeit a little embarrassing," said team flanker B.J. Smith, easing back on the sidelines watching the Panthers' match. "This is one of the few games we've won, let alone won without going home black and blue. This is probably now my only chance of winning man of the match!

"But seriously, we've battled hard to get this far and we were all warmed up on the sideline ready to go when the match was suddenly pulled. So we were very disappointed not to play. However, we still accept the silverware with pride!"
