PPRB's replies to the media

It is not unusual for the media to occasionally run inaccurate news stories on the Force. And the Police Public Relations Branch has been working hard to send prompt replies to the organisations concerned or issue press releases setting the record straight. Now OffBeat will regularly carry a brief summary of these replies for readers. Force members wanting to read replies in full can view them through PEN and POINT.

A Chinese-language newspaper carried a photo of an officer with light-coloured hair and ran criticism from a reader that officers dying their hair hurt the Force's image. A letter was sent to the paper on December 5 clarifying that the concerned officer was actually born with light hair and had not dyed it.

  • A letter was sent to another Chinese-language paper, also on December 5, regarding its report on the suicide of a 14-year-old girl who had been involved in a theft case at school. The report said parents' consent was needed before officers could search students. The letter clarified that a police spokesman had told the paper's reporter that in general police would consult parents or teachers and conduct searches in their presence. It denied parents' approval was required.

  • Another Chinese-language paper received a letter on December 11 refuting its story the previous day that alleged a serving police officer was among three people arrested over an assault case in a Central bakery shop. The letter said a commentary also carried by the paper on the issue, was based on false information and had misled readers and tarnished the Force's image.
