KE degree masters

Academic schematics: CIP Ko and SIP Wong

Two Kowloon East officers recently obtained their master's degrees completing two-year part-time Hong Kong University courses. Chief Inspector Ko Shek-cheong of KE Regional Crime Unit Team Two and Senior Inspector Wong Kwok-kit of the Regional Anti-Triad Unit were awarded the degrees in Public Administration and Criminology respectively, in a November 30 graduation ceremony.

The administration course included human resources and finance management, policy planning and analysis, along with a three-week course on policy making at Qing Hua University in Beijing. CIP Ko said: "As a mid-level manager in the Force, I felt greatly enriched by the course which gave me a better understanding of the Government's policy making and implementation, such as the Enhanced Productivity Programme and the civilianisation of some Force work. I also shared experiences with other course participants, mostly civil servants and staff of non-government agencies."

SIP Wong said he was delighted the course he took offered considerable insight into theories on sociology, criminology, organised crime, the relationship between society, laws and punishment as well as juvenile delinquency.

With Hong Kong turning into a knowledge-based society, it was important to continue study and imperative for officers to continue improving themselves to further enhance Force quality. The pair also said that juggling work and study successfully rested on how well a person's time was managed. They were now considering further courses on laws, and SIP Wong said he would also like to take up accounting studies.

"I once helped investigate a commercial crime and it came to me that knowledge in accounting could be invaluable for officers," he said.
