That's life!

Frontline waterline: SGT Wong Chi-yung and PC Szeto Ho-chuen by the harbour front

Saving lives is a major duty of frontline officers that can bring overwhelming satisfaction. Yet, occasionally, they face dejection when their efforts are in vain.

On January 18, Hong Kong Island Emergency Unit Platoon Three officers rushed to Central's Pier Seven to save a drowning man. Sergeant Wong Chi-yung and Police Constable Szeto Ho-chuen soon arrived and took off their equipment to jump into the chilly water.

With the help of a nearby Environmental Protection Department vessel, the pair brought the drowning man to safety and he recovered in hospital.

However, the happy ending evaded HKI EU Platoon One who faced a similar operation at the Whitty Street Goods Loading Bay on January 12.

PC Ng Tuen-chung jumped into the harbour to save a drowning man. Pulling him from the water they conducted first aid, however he was certified dead on arrival at hospital. PC Ng said: "I feel sad about it, but I hope we can save lives in future."

Ironically, PC Ng and his colleagues saved a drowning man at exactly the same location just over a year ago.
