RMPU caring and compassionate

Grief relief: Mrs Lau thanks the caring officers

Mrs Lau, a North Point resident, visited Hong Kong Island Regional Missing Persons Unit with her son "Tsun Tsai" on December 13, to thank officers who helped locate the runaway 14-year-old.

He went missing on November 17. After an extensive investigation by RMPU, Tsun Tsai was found just a week later and was reunited with his family. Mrs Lau told OffBeat they were impressed by the enthusiastic and helpful North Point Division and HKI RMPU officers.

"Just like any parents who lose their child, the anxiety we felt was unbearable. I thank so much the officers for their considerate work and great effort in comforting us.

"I especially appreciated the unfailing assistance from RMPU Police Constable Kwan Ki-hoi and other officers of the Unit. They patiently kept us informed of the latest developments so we would not have to look for him aimlessly," Mrs Lau said.

"The officers even offered him immediate counselling and taught him a lot after his location. I was really touched by their enthusiastic move."

PC Kwan, who has a son the same age, said it was important for Tsun Tsai to understand the tremendous anxiety experienced by his parents. PC Chan Kon-hung said officers had to stay calm and objective throughout the case to ensure correct judgement.

Woman PC Penny Lee Kit-ching said officers respected the feelings of runaways and tried their best to keep information sources confidential so relations between runaways and friends were not hurt. RMPU officers gave a souvenir pen to Tsun Tsai during the visit and encouraged him to behave himself.

WSIP Kathleen Wong added that in most missing person cases, assistance from other units was vital.

She especially thanked the Police Public Relations Branch for its prompt action in broadcasting an appeal for the whereabouts of a 65-year-old man in the Police Magazine television programme in September. Their quick action helped find the senile dementia sufferer.
