Dementia seminar

Officers are better equipped to help senile dementia sufferers thanks to a recent seminar. Some 39 Regional Missing Persons Unit officers attended the session conducted by doctors from voluntary agency the Alzheimer's Disease and Brain Failure Association on November 18, at Ma On Shan Police Station.

New Territories South RMPU Woman Senior Inspector Jennifer Chin invited Dr David Tai, the Tai Po Hospital's Consultant Geriatrician and Polytechnic University Assistant Professor Dr Jenny Chung to speak on the disease. They gave tips on approaching and handling sufferers, and exchanged opinions with officers.

With an aging population, there were more elderly suffering from the illness, many going missing. Also known as Alzheimer's Disease, the condition causes memory loss and other disabilities.

The experts advised officers to approach sufferers with care, interview them in plainclothes and in a comfortable and quiet environment. The Association can be contacted for assistance, on 2361-2838. Address: G/F Hau Lim House, Lei Cheng Uk Estate, Sham Shui Po.
