Eyes peeled for Eagle operation

KW T Ag SSP David Tallon helps launch Eagle Eye before the press

Kowloon West Traffic has launched a new round of its successful Operation Eagle Eye.

Aimed at enhancing the road safety awareness of public transport passengers on Nathan Road, a series of six week-long operations would be conducted over the next 12 months. The first ran from March 25 to 31. The operation was designed to make drivers and pedestrians more careful, and passengers more aware of their own safety.

Operation Eagle Eye last year proved a big success with casualty reductions of 20 and 10 per cent on Nathan Road and throughout KW respectively. Last year also saw over 3,000 prosecutions related to bad driving manner or jaywalking.

This year KW Traffic have prepared an education and enforcement programme aimed at the five Nathan Road traffic accident blacksites, namely its junctions with Mong Kok, Waterloo, Jordan and Austin Roads, and Argyle Street. The programme included enforcement against jaywalking, the non-wearing of rear seatbelts and bad driving manner.

Franchised buses, public light buses and taxis were the principal targets of the campaign as they were involved in 54 per cent of last year's accidents causing injury on Nathan Road. Passengers would be given education leaflets on safe commuting, and KW Traffic would also remind transport operators of their responsibilities and seek their co-operation in reducing casualties.
