Mainland traffic and wushu treks
Some 50 Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol members visited Fujian Province, March 17 to 21.
Led by Kowloon West Traffic Road Safety Officer and Police Chinese Wushu Club executive member Angela Lai Wai-yin and another executive member Station Sergeant Ma Pak-chuen, they visited the Xiamen traffic command and control centre and were briefed on road engineering and improvement works. Other highlights included a footdrill demonstration by the local road safety patrol made up of primary school students.
While staying at a Southern Shaolin kung fu school in Putian, participants learned the history of Southern Shaolin and visited its timeless monastery, before taking on some martial arts basics.
Meanwhile, February 17 saw more than 100 Wushu Club, Police Chinese Culture Club and Friends of Hope members hold a charity walk from Kowloon City to Tsim Sha Tsui to raise funds for the construction of a school in Henan Province in memory of national hero Yuefei.
The trek was followed by a ferry ride to Jiangmen where participants walked to Xinhui and Yamen to savour some stunning wushu demonstrations and visit the residence of late Dr Sun Yat Sen. The event was a huge success raising $200,000.
The Wushu Club is planning a trip to Putian in July for officers' children. Look for details in upcoming issues of OffBeat or call Shum Kam-tim on 9202-0013.
