Supergamers boost Force medal tally

Force competitors won top medals in the World Supergames 2001 in Christchurch, New Zealand, March 30 to April 8.

They showed their prowess by picking up multiple medals in the fishing and lawn bowls events. The Games saw 1,300 participants from disciplined and military forces around the world, battle in 70 events. Hong Kong's 100 competitors were the largest group.

Airport Deputy District Commander Mike Howard picked up three gold medals and silver in the boat and beach fishing events. He landed a 3.1-kilogram Dogfish while surfcasting in the beach event, which he added to his collection of Sea Perch and Blue Cod. He also won gold in the 'heaviest bag' category, by hooking the top three fish of the event.

"There is a lot of luck involved in fishing and this time around I certainly got lucky!" Mike said.

Meanwhile, Police Lawnbowls Club Chairman Nick Cuthbertson and his 20-strong crew also won several medals in the ladies and rinks categories. Nick even won two silver medals while substituting for another team!

"It took a lot of concentration as the greens there were very high quality and much faster than the ones in Hong Kong," he said, adding the team also found time for a friendly match down in Dunedin.
