Record hemp haul

Cannabis cache: NB officers unload the huge haul

Narcotics Bureau seized a record $126 million worth of cannabis in Kwun Tong and Tai Po and arrested three men on April 24.

The near 2,000-kilogram haul was made after extensive investigations into a transnational trafficking syndicate and intelligence exchange with authorities in Thailand.

NB officers ambushed a lorry in an industrial building in Kwun Tong Road and found it loaded with more than 300 kilograms of the drug.

The two men in the lorry, plus a third man, all aged 34 and 35, were apprehended. With Marine Police assistance, a subsequent search on a motorised vessel moored at Sam Mun Tsai, Tai Po, led to the seizure of a further 1,600 kilograms.

NB Acting Chief Superintendent Sin Kam-wah said the haul originated from either the Golden Triangle or Cambodia, and it was vacuum-packed to keep the drugs fresh for up to two years.

He believed the haul was for the South China, Macau and Hong Kong markets, adding that the seizure had neutralised the syndicate.
