POLICE in brief

An officer warns a pub patron to avoid illegal soccer betting

DRC NTN David Thomas meets pedestrians

New Territories North Deputy Regional Commander David Thomas and NTN Traffic Senior Superintendent Wong Sak-pang kicked-off a fortnight-long pedestrian and cyclist safety drive, May 14.

Aimed at reducing accidents in Tai Po, Border, Yuen Long and Tuen Mun Districts, the drive focused on safety education with officers distributing advisory leaflets at traffic blackspots and issuing verbal warnings.

The drive also covered safety on the Region's six expressways, with NTN Traffic Enforcement and Control officers warning and educating drivers, and prosecuting when necessary, over the dangers of speeding, tailgating and poor lane discipline.

Meanwhile, the NTN T Road Safety Office presented a refrigerator to the Salvation Army Tai Po Multi-Services Centre for the Elderly on April 27. Road Safety Officer Woman Senior Inspector Winnie Wong Chiu-chun drew the fridge at the Hong Kong Road Safety Patrol annual dinner lucky draw last December. Ms Wong hoped the fridge would bring convenience and good fortune to the elderly residents.

Deputy Road Safety Officer Station Sergeant Chiu Kwok-kwan presented the appliance to a centre representative and a resident who handed him a letter of gratitude.

  • Organised Crime and Triad Bureau officers neutralised a soccer bookmaking syndicate after the arrest of four men and a woman in Wan Chai, May 16. The raid came after WC District officers distributed leaflets to the area's many bar patrons, reminding them not to partake in illegal betting.
