Climbing to fitness

Some 15 officers attended a Police Adventure Club rock-climbing course in Fei Ngo Shan, April 8.

The beginners were briefed on climbing skills, safety measures, strategies and equipment by Club instructors. They then put their knowledge into practice under the careful eye of the pros.

Senior Police Constable Lok Wai-keung of the Club, said rock climbing had grown popular in Hong Kong since its introduction in the 1960s.

"It is a healthy and challenging activity where participants need to be fit, have intense concentration, good control of their bodies, acute judgment and strong will," he said.

Woman PC Liu Po-yee and PC Lui Kam-wah said the course gave them a clearer understanding of the sport.

WPC Liu said:"I like outdoor activities and I attended the course to learn more about rock climbing. It was very informative and useful.

"Even if you are physically fit and strong, you are not necessarily a good rock climber because the sport requires participants to have careful, detailed and tactical planning."

PC Lui said the course was very comprehensive and the safety advice given by the instructors helped make the activity both exciting and safe.
