Force computers moving into the new millennium

Ready for action: Force terminals now have MS 02K

The four-month project to upgrade older versions of Microsoft (MS) Office to MS O2K was completed on April 13.

The Force-wide exercise, implemented by the Information Technology Branch, has successfully replaced and standardised MS Office components on the Force's personal computers to improve performance and document exchange, especially between the Chinese and English editions.

The MS O2K Standard Edition, including Word 2000, Excel 2000 and PowerPoint 2000, is now the Force standard for desktop Office Automation application.

It has been installed in over 7,000 networked or standalone Pentium PCs in 258 sites, covering all formations and headquarters units. As a standard application, it will also be installed in newly deployed PCs in the Force.

With the installation of the new version, the proliferation of other MS Office versions in other Government departments and private organisations will no longer lead to incompatibility problems. Electronic documents can be freely exchanged both within and outside the Force.

Besides fixing bugs in older versions and offering more developed functions, the efficiency of electronic document exchange and related daily operations, such as creating documents with charts and text, is significantly improved in the latest version.

About 200 commonly used Force templates, preformatted for fast production of office correspondence, and a English-Chinese dictionary have been installed in the PCs to provide a more user-friendly environment for users to better manage their office work. The Force templates included all largely-used documents such as memo forms and search warrant applications.
