Enhanced ties to tackle IIs

Senior Force officers led by D OPS Ng Wai-kit at the discussion table with GBDB officials

The Force and Guangdong officials have agreed to enhance co-operation and co-ordinated operations to prevent a possible influx of illegal immigrants or an increase in pregnant overstayers following the recent Court of Final Appeal (CFA) ruling on the right of abode.

This was the word from Director of Operations Ng Wai-kit while accompanying a Guangdong Border Defence Bureau (GBDB) delegation to the Border District on July 24.

The eight-member GBDB delegation, led by Director Lin Jieyuan, met Mr Ng and other senior Operations Wing officers on July 23 to discuss anti-illegal immigration measures and boundary security.

The GBDB officials later exchanged views with Marine Police officers on anti-illegal immigration measures and looked at the sea routes taken by IIs sneaking into Hong Kong.

Accompanied by Mr Ng and New Territories North Regional Commander John Chung Hiu-pang, the GBDB delegation visited Border District the next day.

They toured along the boundary fence to get an in-depth understanding on the situation of illegal immigration at the land boundary and Police facilities for detecting IIs.

Mr Ng said during the meeting with the GBDB delegation, both parties reported the illegal immigration situation in their respective areas and staged a key-point discussion on how to strengthen the exchange of intelligence and to enhance land and sea co-operation. Other issues included pregnant IIs giving birth in HK and women sneaking into HK to engage in prostitution.

He stressed there was no indication the number of IIs intercepted at the boundary was on the rise since the CFA ruling and Police had adequate manpower and equipment to tackle any incidents that may occur at the boundary or in HK waters.

Mr Lin also maintained that the GBDB had the ability to prevent Mainland residents from entering HK by illegal means and pledged that both sides would maintain close co-operation in their joint efforts to combat illegal immigration.

The GBDB delegation also paid a courtesy call on CP Tsang Yam-pui on July 25 amid the typhoon conditions.
