Southern beach lovers kept alert

DC W Barry Griffin recruits a beach-safety cadet at Repulse Bay

Western District got the swimming season underway with a beach-theft awareness drive at Repulse Bay on July 15. The campaign was to remind beach-goers to look after their belongings while having fun on the sand and in the water.

The move was the latest in the District's continuing drive to exterminate 'beach rats'. Previous campaigns have proven successful seeing the seven thefts reported in 1998 fall to five last year.

Western District Commander Barry Griffin, Aberdeen Divisional Commander Nelson Lui Hon-kwok, Southern District Fight Crime Committee Chairman Hui Yung-chung and District Council Chairman Chan Yuek-sut distributed souvenirs carrying fight-crime messages to beach-goers.

In his opening speech Mr Griffin said: "Southern District beaches are very popular during the summer months, but it is also a fact that whilst having fun in the water, people tend to neglect the safety of their belongings. We cannot be complacent and must continue our efforts to negate such crime. While you are enjoying the water or sunbathing, always keep an eye on your property."

Other southern beaches such as Stanley and Deep Water Bay were also included in the drive.
