Tea time tips

The first tea forum for a cross-section of frontline officers of the New Territories South Region was held at the NTS Officers' Mess on August 1.

The main purpose of a tea forum is to enhance internal communication and to promote mutual understanding amongst different units within the Region through frank and open discussions on various policing issues. Attendees at the first forum included Regional Commander Mike Dowie, Deputy RC Tang Kam-moon, and representatives from Divisional UB, EU, PTU, Traffic and RCCC.

In the opening address, Mr Dowie compared his role in the Region to that of manager of a football team, with various units playing as members. To achieve the common goal of providing quality service to both internal and external customers, it was paramount that different units worked together as a cohesive team and understood each other's roles, positions and more importantly, difficulties. Suggested solutions to existing problems would be taken on board by Regional Management.

The forum has generated inspiring discussions on a number of topical issues of mutual interest to all participants, including the deployment of police resources in response to non-emergency calls, handling of arrest cases by PTU and EU in Report Rooms, working relationships between Crime and Uniformed officers, deployment of Task Force and "D" shift PSU, and ways to improve the effectiveness of stop and search.

The occasion marked the first such forum in the Region. Crime officers will participate at the next occasion, followed by civilians and staff from supporting units.
