Culture vultures exchange

Delegations representing the Force, Fire Services, Immigration, Customs and Excise and the Scout Association together with teachers and students recently participated in a 10-day cultural exchange programme to Beijing and Xinjiang organised by the Chinese History and Culture Education Foundation for Youth from July 22-31.

Eight junior police officers, led by Assistant Commissioner Personnel Tang King-shing, joined other participants visiting locations of cultural significance including the Great Wall and the Forbidden City.

Vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference hosted a variety show dinner party for the 1,000 delegates at the Great Hall of the People.

Following a warm welcome by officials in Xinjiang, Force delegates attended an education development seminar before visiting Tianshan, Flaming Mountain in Turpan, the ancient city of Jiaohe, Nanshan and the University of Xinjiang.

The Autonomous Region's Deputy Public Security Bureau Director Liu Yiaohua and senior officers met Force representatives where they exchanged organisational structures together with information relating to the law and order situations in both Xinjiang and Hong Kong. Other disciplinary services delegates also met their counterparts while visiting the city.

Commenting on personal highlights of the exchange programme, PTU Headquarters' Ho Kit-ying stated that prior to this visit she had never imagined she would be presented with an opportunity to sing at the Great Hall of the People.

Tin Sum Division's Lau Wing-Fai said he viewed the trip as yet another opportunity to increase his knowledge about Chinese culture.

Cheung Sha Wan Division's Yim Ming stated that he had great admiration for the tenacity and perserverence of the ancient Turpan People, in particular their struggle for survival under adverse climatic conditions through the construction of underground ducts known as Karez wells, and would like to see today's younger generation, especially the more affluent ones, learn from these people.

The JPOs were nominated for the trip by their major formation commanders. They have top potential and high respect for Force values.
