Government officials from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Australia and the United States pledged full support to international co-operation in combating the global drug problem at an asset-sharing cheque presentation ceremony held on September 26 at the Police Officers' Club.

Representing the HKSAR Government, Secretary for Security Regina Ip presented a cheque of HK$5,636,706 (US$722,654) to Acting Deputy Commissioner of Australian Federal Police Denis McDermott and another cheque for HK$27,530,407 (US$3,529,539) to US Consul General Michael Klosson. Acting Commissioner of Police Lau Yuk-kuen also attended the ceremony.

The asset-sharing was agreed on by the Committee on Asset-Sharing chaired by the Commissioner for Narcotics with representatives from the Finance Bureau, Police, Customs & Excise, Department of Justice and Independent Commission Against Corruption. Requests for sharing are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.

The sharing of the confiscated assets of drug traffickers marked the successful co-operation between Hong Kong Police and the Australian and US authorities in the transnational fight against illicit drug trafficking and money laundering activities in two cases.
