A delegation of the Standing Committee on Disciplined Services Salaries and Conditions of Service (SCDS), led by Chairman Bernard Chan, visited a number of police facilities on the evening of September 22.

This was the second SCDS visit to the Force this year. The programme was designed to cater for SCDS expectations of observing officers 'in action', to inspect the catering facilities and quarters, and to meet as many junior police officers as possible.

Greeted by Acting Superintendent Research Conditions of Service Eddie Wong Kwok-wai, the party initially paid an unannounced visit to the North Point Police Station canteen, where SCDS members had a dinner typically enjoyed by police officers in order to sample the standards of catering there.

The delegation then visited one old Police Married Quarters (PMQ) at Tanner Hill and one new PMQ in Chai Wan and spoke to the occupants. They were able to see for themselves the range of accommodation standards available to junior police officers.

A visit to the Hong Kong Island Emergency Unit followed where members observed a briefing during the evening shift changeover and viewed a wide range of equipment carried on EU vehicles. They also discussed a range of issues with junior police officers and met officers of the Regional Anti-II Unit who were attached to EU HKI.

The visit concluded early next morning with a trip to a Wan Chai disco. Members were able to observe personally the problems encountered by officers in policing dance parties with focus on eliminating the abuse of psychotropic drugs. They also took the opportunity to discuss police work and other issues with frontline officers.

Members of the SCDS delegation were happy with the visit which had enabled them to gain firsthand information regarding the working conditions of officers, and to also meet and talk with frontline staff.
