Psynet series - Rising up from the depths: Calligraphy with water

I had an opportunity to visit Tian Tan Park (Temple of Heaven) one morning during my study tour in Beijing a month ago. As I walked around leisurely preparing myself for the new day, a gentleman attracted my attention. He was writing large characters on the ground using a brush with water. As I observed him painting his calligraphy so peacefully and calmly I felt envious on one hand, but was also inspired regarding our attitude when facing difficulties on the other.

When in a desperate situation it is quite common for one to have feelings of inadequacy. Some people focus on the negatives like a lack of care from others, bad luck or financial limitations. Others, who take things even further, may feel that they have nothing.

I could feel the inner strength and harmony of that gentleman in Beijing as he gave his calligraphy his undivided attention. It was such a good demonstration of joy made possible through appreciation for, and utilisation of, existing resources. An extravagant lifestyle may produce moments of enjoyment, but prudent spending of our finances can also bring us happiness through an appreciation of the simple things in life.

Life is full of ups and downs. We have to try out new methods of approaching things and also be creative in the process. It is like writing with water. If it is not good the first time we wait until it dries, and then we can try again. It may get better.

The last important point is that when we have serious problems we need to be able to express our thoughts and emotions. It can be as personal and solitary as calligraphy, or shared with friends. This is a much more constructive way of dealing with things rather than keeping everything to yourself.
