The Chinese Processing Support Section of the Information Technology Branch formulated a plan in August 1999 for the Force to migrate to the ISO 10646 standard in the long term in order to be in line with the information technology strategy of the Government to migrate all its computer systems to the ISO 10646 standard.

Phase one of this plan regarding the implementation of the 'Hong Kong Supplementary Chinese Character Set for Big 5' has completed (please refer to OffBeat Issue 716).

The Chinese Processing Support Section is conducting a feasibility study prior to Phase two regarding the implementation of 'ISO 10646 + Extension A + HKSCS for ISO 10646'. The feasibility study is expected to be completed in the next few months.

After the adoption of ISO 10646 (or Unicode), new computer systems can make use of the 'Universal Character Set' to support multi-lingual applications. For instance, both traditional and simplified Chinese characters can be supported simultaneously by the same application.

Note: ISO 10646 is an international coding standard developed under the aegis of the International Standardization Organization (ISO) to embrace characters used in all major languages of the world.
