Rising up from the depths:
A depressed officer's 'road to recovery'

Two years ago, I became ill for unknown reasons. I felt hot and cold. I felt discomfort. I had a medical check and nothing wrong was found. However, I lost weight as time went by. I became annoyed, emotional, pessimistic and helpless. I felt tense all the time and could not sleep. Later, after being diagnosed by professionals, I realised that I was suffering from depression.

At first, I sought treatment from many Chinese and Western medical practitioners but to no avail. I also took exercise and practised qigong. However, being too eager and anxious, I overworked myself. One year passed by, my health was still very poor and I lost some 20 pounds.

At this moment, there were changes to my work. I had to be on beat patrol on a three-shift system. Under the new working conditions, it was even harder for me to get some quality sleep. My body was weak and I felt very painful. I still tried hard to finish my daily work but my family members became my targets when I tried to release my pressure.

I then asked myself how to find a way out. This was the first step that I took. I also adopt the following methods to handle my problem:

(1) Medication: I consult a doctor and take my medication regularly. Also, my oriental herbalist often gives me encouragement.

(2) Psychological treatment: I overcame my worries and took the initiative to seek help from the Psychological Services Group. During the course of treatment, I learnt how to change my thoughts to handle my depression and anxiety. Some of my biased conceptions were gradually changed. I began to think in a more positive way. I am now more optimistic and I feel more relaxed than before.

(3) Family: My problem brings pressure on my family members. I am very grateful for their understanding and care, which is very important to my recovery.

(4) Living habit: I take more rest daily and do not think too much about disappointing things. I persistently carry out exercises of appropriate quantity.

(5) Work: When encountering difficulties in work, I face them in a positive manner and do not take it out on others. I relax myself more as far as possible.

Although I have not fully recovered, I am a totally different person now compared with the one a year ago. I hope, with my perseverance and confidence, I can recover very soon. I wish all of you a happy and healthy life.
