The bicycle track in Sha Tin is popular and accidents involving bicycles occurred there from time to time. The New Territories South Road Safety Section thus invited the Auxiliary Medical Service (AMS) to set up a first aid post to provide medical services to cyclists and other members of the public in need on Sunday and during holidays. Posters promoting cycling safety messages are also displayed at the post.

The AMS established a temporary first aid post under a Yuen Wo Road flyover in July 1999 and since then they have provided medical services in unsatisfactory environment in more than 1,500 cases.

The Road Safety Section has spent two years to apply to the Government for land grant to establish a more ideal medical post beside the Rowing Club near Shing Mun River under the sponsorship of AIA Foundation.

Traffic New Territories South Senior Superintendent Peter Bacon, Program Director of AIA Foundation Jimmy Hung, AMS Acting Chief Staff Officer Luk Wai-hung and Sha Tin District Council Chairman Wai Kwok-hung opened the new medical post on November 11.

At the opening ceremony, Mr Hung Chung-yam, a former representative of the Hong Kong Bicycle Team, gave a talk on safe cycling while AMS members staged a first aid demonstration.
