China's entry to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) will bring many economic opportunities and challenges to it but will also provide opportunities for commercial and economic frauds.

The Hong Kong Police Force and the Economic Crime Investigation Department of the Ministry of Public Security jointly organised the "2001 Contemporary Economic Crime Seminar" in Shanghai between November 14 and 15 to conduct in-depth discussions on the fight against economic crime in the latest economic situation.

A Force delegation led by Assistant Commissioner Crime Peter Yam Tat-wing attended the seminar. They discussed with senior Mainland officials a wide range of topics including financial and economic crime, intellectual property rights crime, corporate crime, cyber crime, crime trends following China's entry to WTO and related police counteracting measures. The symposium will enhance economic crime investigation in the Mainland and strengthen the links and communications between the Force and Mainland counterparts in combating and preventing cross-boundary economic crime.

Two Commercial Crime Bureau representatives, Senior Superintendent Law Ping-kuen and Chief Inspector Leung Sheung-kui, also participated in the "Seminar on Risks and Practice of Payment Card Operation 2001" in Shanghai on November 16. They discussed the risks involved in payment card operation and the measures to prevent and combat payment card frauds with industry representatives and Mainland economic crime investigation officers.
