We talked about how to find a particular string from an Excel worksheet last time, now we will learn how to replace a specified character string with another string by using the 'Replace' command.
1. Choose the 'Replace' option from the 'Edit' menu or simply press
2. Type the character string you want to search for in the 'Find what:' field and the string you want to substitute in the 'Replace with:' field. For instance, to replace 'HKPF' with 'Hong Kong Police Force', type 'HKPF' in the 'Find what:' field and 'Hong Kong Police Force' in the 'Replace with:' field.
3. Click the 'Find Next' button or press
4. Click the 'Replace' button to substitute the 'Find what:' string with the 'Replace with:' string when you have located a string you want to change. After the replacement, Excel will move to the next cell containing the string to be replaced.
5. Click the 'Replace All' button so that Excel will replace the cells that contain the 'Find what:' string all at once instead of having to replace them one by one.
6. Use wildcard characters ('?' and '*') in the 'Find what:' field to broaden your search scope. For example, to change all 'HK Police Force' and 'Hong Kong Police Force' to 'HKPF', just type 'H*Police Force' in the 'Find what:' field and 'HKPF' in the 'Replace with:' field and then click the 'Replace All' button.
