Here we are ... to serve the community

A series of Force activities are in the pipeline to demonstrate our strong support for the Serving the Community Festival 2002 to be held between January 20 and February 2.

With the theme of "A Civil Service for Asia's World City", the two-week government-wide festival aims to familiarise members of the public with the services provided by various government departments.

A grand opening ceremony will be held at the Tamar Site on January 20.

A total of 51 government departments will set up exhibition booths at the Tamar Site and participate in a number of performances. The Police Band will play in the opening ceremony while the Police dogs will display their skills at the exhibition.

Service Quality Wing Chief Superintendent Gordon Yeung Ying-wai told OffBeat: "The Force will demonstrate its professionalism and commitment to improving its service through participation in the festival."

"In addition to Force-related photos, videos and posters, advanced equipment such as new BMW Police motorbikes and a Saxon armoured vehicle will also be on display at our booth at the Tamar exhibition.

"Kids will have an opportunity to put on scaled-down police uniforms to sample the pride of being an officer. Visitors can also try on bullet resistant vests and play a fight crime game," CSP Yeung said.

Sixteen frontline Junior Police Officers, who are members of the Work Improvement Teams of different formations, will receive visitors to the Force exhibition booth and share their frontline experience with them.

Different Police formations will hold many other activities during the two-week festival. The open days of the Western, Kwun Tong, Sham Shui Po, Tsuen Wan and Tai Po Police Stations and the Marine Harbour Division Base will be the highlights of the event.

"Visitors can tour the newly refurbished police stations, feel the warm and friendly atmosphere and try out the advanced and user-friendly facilities," enthused CSP Yeung.

"To tie in with our annual winter precaution campaign, a series of crime prevention activities will be held in different districts. They include various fight crime carnivals and seminars, as well as anti-youth crime and drug abuse lectures.

"As an on-going effort to promote road safety, all Road Safety Towns will be open on January 27 while traffic officers will conduct on-street educational activities at traffic black sites.

"Meanwhile, officers from different formations will participate in a number of voluntary community services such as visiting schools and distributing gifts to the elderly in hospitals and old-aged homes," CSP Yeung added.

He called on colleagues to actively participate in the Serving the Community Festival. "We hope that the two-week event will further foster the caring culture within the Force and help officers understand that we are serving the community with pride and care. We expect that our colleagues will not only deliver a professional service but also be considerate while carrying out their duties."

Details of the Serving the Community Festival will be uploaded on POINT. For enquiries, please contact chief coordinator of the event, Service Quality Wing Woman Chief Inspector Josephine Lau Wai-mun on 2866-6958.
