'The Brawl in the Hall' |

The second annual Police Officers' Club Boxing Smoker night certainly lived up to the pre-fight hype, with another great night of boxing being arranged by the organisers on December 8. Once again, the POC management pulled out all the stops in decorating the dining room in appropriate boxing decor and serving up a veritable feast on the night. Senior Inspector David Williams was the Master of Ceremonies for the second year running, and his performance had the whole room rolling in the aisles. We are in serious danger of losing him to Don King Productions and a new career in Las Vegas. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of the 'Elvis' impersonator who fortunately left the building after only one rendition of something that sounded vaguely akin to 'Viva Las Vegas!' The boys of the Police Operation Breakthrough Boxing Club were magnificent as usual, and there were some truly rousing bouts staged. Young Derek Mackesy had his gutsy opponent reeling across the ring on a couple of occasions, bringing the crowd to its feet. Alex Hoggard had another good fight, showcasing some classy boxing skills, narrowly dropping a split decision to his more powerful opponent, Horrace. The third fight was a real slug fest with both boxers standing toe to toe and giving as good as they got! The eventual winner 'Ah Yiu' was also later awarded with the Blaine Hoggard Cup for the 'Best Boxer on the Night' for his courageous performance. The headline bout of the night featured the Force's own Superintendent Barry Smith against Tony 'TNT' Trimble, who is a former British, European and Hong Kong Champion and was at one time rated number seven in the World Kickboxing ratings. BJ, knew that he had a huge mountain to climb if he was to beat a boxer of Tony's vast experience and skill and the fight turned out to be real 'battle royale' with BJ giving a great account of himself. The ring-wise Tony Trimble however managed to weather the storm and dug in with some powerful hooks to the head and body which left BJ visiting the canvas on a couple of occasions. It has to be said however that BJ proved to be a very game contender, getting straight back into the fight, and as Tony said afterwards : "I couldn't believe it when he kept getting back up... I was praying that he would just stay down!" The decision went the way of Tony in the end, but the crowd were all very proud of the brave performance put up by our own boy!! Director of Operations Ng Wai-kit presented the prizes at the end of a thoroughly enjoyable evening.
