The Force has launched a campaign to promote healthy lifestyle awareness and to encourage officers to quit smoking.

The themes of the Anti-smoking Campaign 2002, organised in co-operation with the Hospital Authority (HA) and the University of Hong Kong's Department of Nursing Studies, are:

  • to educate smokers on health hazards of smoking and encourage them to quit the habit;

  • to educate non-smokers on health hazards of smoking; and

  • to promote passive smoking awareness among Force members.

The HA will provide professional anti-smoking seminars/counselling and organise smoke cessation courses/workshops, while the Department of Nursing Studies will advise on the design and content of the programme.

"The first phase of the campaign, which is a pilot scheme, will be held at the Police Training School (PTS) and Police Tactical Unit (PTU) and last for six months starting from the end of February. A review will then be carried out to consider extending the scheme to other Police formations," the Chairman of Healthy Lifestyle Working Group and Chief Superintendent (Personnel Services), Jawaid Khan, told OffBeat.

The first phase of the programme will focus on new PTS recruits, as well as detectives attending Detective Training School and companies under training at the PTU.

Apart from seminars and counselling courses, the Chairman said, "quit smoking ambassadors" would be appointed to co-ordinate follow-up actions with the HA through Personnel Services Branch.

Officers from other formations wishing to attend such courses in their own time may contact Superintendent (Catering, Sports & Recreation) Lee Ying-min at 2804-1130 or by PEN at sp-csr-ps.
