A change in our mindset

Previously in this series, our members have shared their experience and views on areas where special attention and care are needed when dealing with members of the public. Among other things, they highlighted the importance of "Professionalism", "Quality Service", "Communication with members of the public", "Flexibility" and "Striking the balance". These phrases sound familiar, as they are mostly the "Values" of our Force's Vision Statement.

One of CPC's aims is to reduce or minimise the number of complaints. However, to a large organisation like our Force, the existence of a system specifically set up to address complaints from the public is necessary and vital. A conduit for the public to channel complaints serves many important purposes. Among other things, it is as an avenue for collecting the public's view on their expectations of the Police, and an indicator on the need to improve certain aspects of our service. We should therefore take a more positive view of our CAPO system.

As the popular saying goes: "Do more, more mistakes; do less, less mistakes; do nothing, no mistakes". It might sound like a "golden rule" when first heard. But a person with this kind of attitude will obviously try to avoid work at all costs. In doing so, he will not bother to learn and keep himself abreast of the Force's development and changes, not to say, to meet the changes and needs of the society. He will gradually become ignorant, lazy and be more prone to making mistakes which might lead to more complaints or even more serious consequences-the loss of his job or life.

Finally, how can we prevent complaints? I believe it involves a change in our mindset. Living the Values of the Force's Vision Statement would help us prevent complaints, be more committed to our work, find satisfaction in ourselves as well as our job, and also live our lives in a more positive way. Remember, "Rome was not built in a day".
