Physically fit officers holding the rank of Sergeant and who are interested in becoming experts in airport security now have the opportunity to join a Police team dedicated in keeping our airport secure from terrorist attacks.

Those who meet the criteria and are selected by the Airport Security Unit will have to undergo vigorous physical training and instruction in the use of specialised firearms and tactics.

"Our primary duty is to ensure the security of Hong Kong International Airport, and every member of the unit should have a strong sense of responsibility and commitment in the execution of their duties," ASU Chief Inspector Ray Ng Shan-ho said, stressing that deterrence and containment of a terrorist attack required a high level of readiness.

Mr Ng said these requirements had been embodied in a vision statement codified earlier to provide a common objective for all members.

The four core elements of the vision statement - highly motivated, professional, prestigious and specialised - are each supported by five guiding principles (values) for the unit, which promises to be a platform for grooming operational leaders, and is specialised in firearms and tactics, resistance control, aviation security and protective coverage.

According to Mr Ng the vision statement was formulated after a series of workshops with members of the unit.

"Our ultimate aim is to ensure that each team member is well-prepared and well-trained to make Hong Kong International Airport one of the safest airports in the world," he added.

Officers joining the unit are required to take part in daily physical training and undergo weekly continuation training to ensure optimum readiness to respond to an incident.

Those interested can attend a pre-selection seminar which will be held at 10 am on March 16 at the Airport Police Station where they will be briefed on the application and selection procedures.

All applicants will have to undergo a comprehensive medical examination prior to an initial two-day selection process in mid-April, followed by an eight-week Basic Training Course. For details, please refer to the PEN message circulated on February 21.
