Thirty-nine members of the Hong Kong Consular Corps were taken on a tour of the Force's state-of-the-art Tactical Training Complex at the Police Training School in Aberdeen on March 7.
They comprised 22 Consuls General and 17 Consuls and Honorary Consuls. The visit to the Police facility was at the invitation of the Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui.
They were greeted on arrival at the Police Training School (PTS) by Director of Personnel and Training Foo Tsun-kong, the Commandant of PTS Hung Hak-wai and Deputy Commandant Austin Kerrigan.
The diplomats were shown various training facilities of the complex and a series of demonstrations of Police tactics, including tactical approach to suspects and dealing with an armed robbery in progress situation.
"They were really amazed by the realism of the streets and shops in the live demonstrations and wanted to know where the scenarios came from,"a PTS staff member told OffBeat.
"They were told that these were based on officers' real life experiences."
"Several Consuls General were very impressed in the ability of the Complex Control Centre to monitor several zones and their activities simultaneously, and with the fact that trainees could receive instant, video-recorded feedback on where they had gone wrong or done well from the monitoring equipment."
After the tour, the party was invited to lunch hosted by Deputy Commissioner Management Lee Ming-kwai, who thanked the diplomats for taking the time to visit the Police training facility.
Following the lunch, the Consular Corps, accompanied by Mr Lee, visited the Western Police Station where they were shown the report room and the resource centre which were renovated under the Station Improvement Project.
The Doyen of the Consular Corps Armando Jarque of Mexico wrote to the Commissioner Tsang Yam-pui after the tour to express their appreciation. In the letter, he said: "We are really impressed by the quality of training that the Hong Kong Police receive and with the availability of spectacular training facilities.
"It is no wonder why Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world, having such a well disciplined and trained Police force has everything to do with it."
