Force Byte - Splitting Excel sheet into panes

0 Photo

Do you still remember how to split a sheet into panes by dragging either split bar with the mouse? If not, there are two more ways to achieve the same result, and all you need to do is:

  • double-click either split box to split the window vertically or horizontally, and

  • choose the "Split" command from the "Window" menu to split the window into vertical and horizontal panes simultaneously.

Recall the worksheet with data and totals in columns A through O and rows 1 through 38. First split the window into two panes - one 12 columns wide and the other 1 column wide - to keep sight of the totals in column O. Then split the window horizontally between rows 37 and 38 to keep an eye on the monthly totals in row 38.

Before double-clicking one of the split boxes or choosing the "Split"command, select a cell in the sheet where you want the split to occur. The sheet will then be split to the left of or above the selected cell. For example, if you want to create a vertical split between columns L and M in the above worksheet, select a cell in column M and then double-click the vertical split box. Similarly, if you like to create a horizontal split between rows 37 and 38, select a cell in row 38 and then double-click the horizontal split box.

Alternatively, you can choose the "Split" command from the "Window" menu to create both vertical and horizontal windowpanes quickly. In this example, you just need to select cell ÒO38Ó and then apply the command.

Furthermore, if cell "A1" is selected, both methods will split the sheet in the center.

In the next exercise, I will talk about "Freezing Panes".
