The Hong Kong Police Rugby Club recently hosted a nine-day visit by the British Police Rugby Club.

The touring party was led by Chief Constable Ben Gunn of the Cambridgeshire Constabulary and was met at the airport by Superintendent Steve Tarrant of Organised Crime and Triad Bureau.

"This was a large touring group who took their rugby very seriously and in order to attempt to meet their high standards we fielded a Commissioner's Select XV who included many of the best players from other clubs as well as some of our own brave lads," the captain of the Police team, Chief Inspector Dave Lewis, told OffBeat.

"Despite a valiant showing we were still comprehensibly beaten 63-5 in what was a very challenging and physical encounter.

"The standard of rugby in the UK is played at a much higher level and one should bear in mind that this team has been coached by ex-Scottish International Derek Turnbull.

"I would however point out an excellent performance by SGT Li Wing-wah, burly prop Dave Grant and flankers Robbie Mac Robbie and B J Smith all of whom showed some dazzling individual skills and gave us our only try of the match," Mr Lewis said.

Mr Lewis also thanked Deputy Commissioner Management, Mr Lee Ming-kwai, and DRC Marine, Mr Burbidge King, for officiating at the match.
