Marine Region takes delivery of two high-tech vessels |

The capability and effectiveness of Marine Police in combating illegal sea-borne activities have been further enhanced with the delivery of two state-of-the-art vessels this year. The new "Keka" class all-aluminium boats were delivered to the Marine Region in January and May after successfully undergoing sea trials. One is attached to Marine East in Sai Kung and the other is with Marine South in Aberdeen. Each weighs 105 tons, measures 30 metres in length and is 6.3 metres in width (beam overall). Its draught is 2.2 metres. According to SIP Pang Wai-keung from Sea Standards Division, Marine Headquarters, the "Keka" has a top speed of 27 knots - the fastest when compared with other similar craft in the fleet. "The boat is also much lighter because of it's all-alluminium superstructure and hull, and therefore more fuel efficient and economical to operate," Mr Pang said. "Navigating the craft is also made much easier because it is equipped with state-of-the-art thermal imager, global positioning system, echo sounder, radar, electronic chart plotter and gyrocompass. "One unique feature is the vessel's 360-degree view in the wheelhouse which enables the crew to observe sea activities or movements in all directions. "The vessel is also equipped with a hydraulic crane for launching and retrieving its high-speed small craft used for intercepting boats suspected of smuggling goods and illegal immigrants. "We are still monitoring the vessels' performance, and so far we are in the process of receiving feedback from our end users. "Based on our evaluation of the "Keka", together with input from Marine Department, a decision will be made in due course whether to procure a further four launches," he added.
