Four members of the Force received Merit awards from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for what is described as "unprecedented levels of cooperation with the US authorities in combating crimes that posed dangers on an international scale". The presentation was made at the office of the Interpol Division, Liaison Bureau, on behalf of the Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigations, by the Assistant Chief of International Relations, Mr Walter Smith, and two locally based agents, Anthony Lau and Becky Chan. The officers receiving the award were Detective Senior Inspectors, Mr Todd Bancroft and Mr Courtney Chung Hung-yip and two Detective Police Constables, Mr Jong Chak-ming and Yip Chi-keung. Agent Tony Lau explained that of particular note was the large number of fugitive arrests and extraditions effected by Interpol in recent months. These included the arrest and extradition to the USA of two of the country's 'most wanted' criminals: Siny Van Tran and Nam The Tham. They were responsible for shooting six Boston citizens, in a Chinatown bar, in early 1991. Five of their victims died, while a sixth survived despite serious injury.
