The Police Public Relations Branch issued a press release on July 23 refuting allegations in newspaper reports that a Police Sergeant who shot himself on July 22 did so (1) because his employment contract had not been renewed and (2) because he had incurred huge gambling debts. The Sergeant's employment contract runs until his retirement, aged 55, in 2004 and there was no evidence of excessive debt. Police welfare officers are liaising with the family and will render every possible assistance to them. "Any speculative reports on the cause of the suicide will only deepen the grief of the family members," said a spokesman.

A letter was sent to a Chinese-language newspaper correcting errors in that newspaper's report on the arrest of three Pakistani members of a car theft syndicate. The letter stressed that no officers had drawn their revolvers during the incident and that no mention of them doing so had been made at a press conference held on July 27.
