Secretary for Justice goes camping

Drug abuse and shop theft should be the focus in the prevention of youth crime and full support from members of the public is indispensable to tackle the problem.

This was said by the Secretary for Justice, Ms Elsie Leung, during a visit to the Junior Police Call (JPC) Fight Crime Summer Camp at Wu Kwai Sha Youth Village in Ma On Shan.

The annual JPC summer camp is organised by the Police with sponsorship and support from a number of organisations. It aims at providing wholesome activities for JPC members during the summer vacation.

This year, the camp adopted the theme of 'Join us to fight crime' - with emphasis on shop theft involving young people, drug abuse, street deception and domestic burglaries."

Ms Leung said: "Educating youngsters on the serious consequences of committing crimes and instilling in them positive values through participation in healthy activities will help a lot in addressing the issue."

"In addition to inter-departmental initiatives, full support from and active involvement by different sectors of the community are essential," she added. Accompanied by the Commissioner Mr Tsang Yam-pui, Ms Elsie Leung visited players in the "No Drug Action" Basketball Competition, met with Hong Kong's Nepalese JPC members and Macau JPC members and sampled some exciting games in the "Fight Crime Game Stall City" as well as attending a mini-concert.

Other officiating guests included the Assistant Director of Broadcasting, Mr Shiu Lo-sin and the Commissioner for Narcotics, Mrs Clarie Lo, who presented prizes to winners of the Basketball Competition Messages on "anti-drugs and fight crime" were effectively disseminated to campers through a wide variety of activities including film shows, seminars, fight crime games and various sports activities.

Running from August 20 to 23, the JPC fight crime summer camp attracted nearly 1,500 JPC members.
