The Fight Crime Publicity Campaign will be rolled out in two phases starting with an 'anti-shop theft' message and followed in December with an 'anti-residential burglary' message.

This was announced by the Director of Operations, Mr Tang King-shing, at the early-August launching ceremony for this year's Fight Crime Publicity Campaign.

"The first phase," he explained, "is actually a continuation of last year's campaign on 'anti youth crime' involving a tripartite alliance of parents, schools and Police under the slogan "Shop Theft. Think of the Cost!"

The Fight Crime Publicity Campaign for last year was not only well-received by local residents but also attracted international accolades: (1) TV API "Puppet" won the Silver Award in the 15th Mercury Awards in New York City in January 2002; (2) TV API "Puppet" won the Silver Award of the Questar Award 2002 in New York City; and, (3) TV API "Anti-computer crime" won the Gold Award of the Quester Award 2002 in New York City.

The Fight Crime Publicity Campaign is organised by the Fight Crime Committee Publicity Sub-committee, chaired by Police Public Relations Branch, whose members comprise representatives from the Security Bureau, the Force, the Information Services Department, the Education Department, the Social Welfare Department, the Home Affairs Department and District Fight Crime Committees.

The launching ceremony, held at The Centre in Central, doubled as the Central and Western District 'Help People to Help Themselves Fight Crime Campaign 2002' with local fight crime ambassadors receiving their certificates of appointment.

Other officiating guests included the Police Regional Commander of Hong Kong Island, Mr Yuen Ying-lam; Chairman of Central and Western District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Chan Hay; member of Central and Western District Council, Mr Ip Kwok-him; and Acting Central and Western District Officer, Miss Cheung Pui-shan.

Local and international acclaim for last year's TV APIs. An even greater effort will be made this year
