"Police officers should make full use of their spare time by taking up further studies to prepare for new challenges and to better serve the community in an ever-changing society," said Deputy Commissioner (Management), Mr Fung Siu-yuen, during the November 22 opening ceremony of the Force's Learning & Development Exhibition 2002.

"We fully support the Government's initiatives on 'life-long learning' and 'self-advancement' and will do our utmost to motivate our staff to develop themselves by pursuing job-related knowledge and skills at their own pace because, in doing so, they will help to better equip the Force to meet public aspirations," continued Mr Fung.

Also speaking at the ceremony was the Civil Service Training & Development Institute Director, Mr William Ng Wing-cheung, who told the floor that officers might sometimes find it difficult to choose from the many training opportunities available.

"As far as job-related training is concerned, you should go for courses the contents of which are in line with your department's policy, objectives and the way forward," he said.

Other officiating guests were the Director of Personnel & Training, Mr Foo Tsun-kong, the Assistant Commissioner (Training), Mr David Thomas, and the Assistant Commissioner (Personnel), Mr Chan Wai-ki.

For the second year running, the Training Wing organised event was held at the Police Sports & Recreation Club. A host of different Police formations, local universities and institutes as well as Government departments, set up booths to provide an abundance of information on the opportunities and channels for continuous learning offered by the Force and other organisations.

They included the Training Incentive Scheme as well as a Training and Development Programme for junior Police officers and inspectors. The programme, with as many as 3,400 participants, offered training and development opportunities including overseas and Mainland courses and exchange activities, sponsorship for officers enrolling in management and related courses, secondment of police officers to other Government departments or private corporations, and seminars on job-related knowledge and skills.

Seminars and experience-sharing sessions on various topics including handling youths at risk, understanding the criminal mind and time management were also held.
