The new 'Work from Home' service recently rolled out by ITB has received an enthusiastic response from end-users. The service, which provides a secure link to the Police Data Network, allows users to access their Force e-mail accounts and other Force systems from home. Security is further enhanced by the use of 'SecurID' tags with security login numbers that change minute by minute. Due to the demands that the service makes on the network, the system has so far only been offered to Chief Superintendents and above.

"In an ideal world, there wouldn't be a need for this service. However, given the realities of Police work we were aware a demand for this service existed and would give officers a degree of flexibility" noted Mr Mike Holubowskyj, CIP EPOL, who coordinated the rollout to end-users.

Mr Freddy Leung who led the ITB team that developed the service explained some of the challenges the team faced: "We had to design a system that could work on a broad range of home computers with many different software configurations. This provided us with a number of hurdles to overcome, but I think we managed it in the end!"

Yau Tsim District Commander, Mr John Bicknell, was enthusiastic about the new service: "Even for a computer illiterate like me, I was amazed at how easy it was to install. This is an excellent way to stay in touch". Perhaps the most telling comment was from Deputy Commissioner (Operations), Mr Lee Ming-kwai: "You won't see me in the office on Sundays anymore!"
