The award package includes a wooden plaque to be presented by the CP to the Formation / Unit concerned, plus a Major Formation Commander (MFC)'s compliment in the form of a dossier entry to members of the Formation / Unit.

A recommending officer should take the following points into consideration when making a recommendation:

(a) Only Formations and Units as defined in PGO 1-06 are eligible;

(b) Justification for commendation should be considered from a broad perspective. Given that crime or operational oriented achievements are easier to quantify, administrative and management accomplishments of a Formation/Unit should not be overlooked;

(c) Due to the diverse natures of Formations and Units within the Force, it would be appropriate for respective Programme Managers to determine a reasonable time period to assess the performance of Formations/Units under their command;

(d) In the case of a single incident, recommendation for commendation is to be submitted as soon as possible and not later than three months after the incident upon which the recommendation is based, and

(e) In the event of a Formation/Unit being nominated for good performance in connection with a crime-related matter, an award should await the conclusion of related court cases and appeals.

Award of commendation can be initiated directly by CP or any SDG member.

As to the bottom-up approach, a Formation Commander may put up recommendation through the MFC and appropriate Programme Manager for consideration. Likewise, MFC may recommend a Formation for the commendation through his/her Programme Manager.
