Welcome back

Police Constable Mr Yuen Chi-wai was welcomed by his colleagues with open arms when he returned to the Yau Ma Tei Police Station, nearly two months after he came down with Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

Facing no discrimination at work, he was happy to see his teammates at the Yau Ma Tei Patrol Sub-Unit Team 5 again. Led by Yau Tsim District Commander Mr Kevin Michael Woods, his colleagues gave him a nice surprise with a specially organised welcoming party for him on May 6.

Mr Yuen said: "I didn't know beforehand that they had organised a party for me attended by senior Police management to show that they cared about my feelings. I was really happy."

On his recovery, he had thanked all medical staff, his colleagues and of course, his wife (a six-month pregnant policewoman), for their care and support. Mr Yuen said his heart was at ease, especially because he knew that none of his family members, colleagues or patients in the same ward had caught the illness from him.

Now, the 30-year-old policeman can continue to carry out his policing duties with confidence and go jogging for 30 minutes to keep up his physical strength. But he will never forget his ordeal at hospital.

On March 10, Mr Yuen was admitted to Tuen Mun Hospital with fever, diarrhoea and muscle aches. At that time, SARS was so new to Hong Kong that no one knew much about the disease. His doctor could hardly explain what had happened.

At one point in time, his condition was so bad that his doctor had already told his family that his life was at risk.

Mr Yuen recalled: "At the hospital, I had difficulty in breathing and could hardly walk to the washroom. But I had never thought that my condition was so serious that I could really die."

Though Mr Yuen was later put in an isolation ward, he knew that he was not alone in the fight as he had the support of his family, colleagues and friends.

His condition became stable after showing positive effects to drugs like Ribavirin and steroids.

After recovering from the disease, Mr Yuen has not forgotten other SARS patients still in hospitals and has twice donated his blood serum for medical treatment.

"When I first donated my serum on April 17, it was just 15 days after I was discharged from hospital. Because I had only just recovered, it was quite difficult for me to do so. I did so because it could help others.

"I shall continue to donate my serum if there is a need for me to do so," Mr Yuen said. As a recovered SARS patient, he pledged to support all campaigns against the SARS outbreak.

During his spare time, he continues to keep up his volunteer work. He is an active volunteer Regularly, he assists elderly people to move their homes and visits disabled people.

Although it is still a mystery how he got the disease, Mr Yuen sincerely hopes that every patient faces the disease positively and will soon recover.
