SCDS Members see the 'Force in Action'
After viewing the reporting and interviewing facilities and video records showing officers handling demanding and difficult complainants, there followed an informal discussion session with Kowloon City Divisional Commander Mr Chau Tai-tak, Tsim Sha Tsui Division Duty Officer Mr Lam Tsz-ming, and a number of officers from CAPO K.
The visiting members showed great interest, and came away with a better understanding of the underlying difficulties and pressures officers have to shoulder in managing complaints, particularly those of an unreasonable, unfounded or malicious nature.
On May 13, SCDS Chairman, The Honourable Bernard Chan led Messrs Nicky Lo, Ronald J Arculli, Eddie Ng, Joseph Ho and Herbert Tsoi on a visit to three distinctive operational units at Police Tactical Unit (PTU) Headquarters.
Starting off with a Close Crowd Control exercise, officers of PTU 'C' Company demonstrated the range of techniques required to manage different types of public order events, including the removal of 'passive' protestors. Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) officers then painted a realistic picture of the extreme dangers involved in handling a Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) incident. Finally, Special Duties Unit officers demonstrated their ability to deal with extreme threats to public safety.
Given the particularly volatile state of security worldwide recently, this visit helped to reflect the difficulties and potential dangers borne by police officers in dealing with all types of incidents challenging public order and safety.
Before the visitors left they joined participating officers of all ranks in a frank but enjoyable exchange of views on a wide range of conditions of service issues.
