The 'Anti-Drugs Carnival 2003', which was jointly organised by the Staff Relations Group of the Personnel Wing and the four Police Staff Associations, was successfully held at the Police Sports & Recreation Club on August 9. Other participating units included the Narcotics Division of the Security Bureau, the Society for the Aid & Rehabilitation of Drug Abusers (SARDA), the Narcotics Bureau, the Police Dog Unit, the Crime Prevention Bureau, and the Police Public Relations Branch. Over 4,000 members of the Force, their family members, and members of the Junior Police Call from various districts attended the Carnival. Honourable guests officiating at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Mr Chan Wai-ki, Assistant Commissioner (Crime) Mr Lo Yik-kee, as well as Acting Commissioner for Narcotics Mr Ting Lup-wong, Acting Executive Director of SARDA Mr Frankie Sun, and representatives of the four Police Staff Associations. NB Acting Chief Superintendent Mr Sham Wai-kin, said: "NB welcomed the opportunity to be involved in the Carnival. I hope that the children and parents who took part had an interesting and fun day during which they absorbed the serious drug abuse prevention message and will go on to share it with their peers." Apart from a variety of drug education exhibitions and game booths at the venue, a Creative Junior Painters' Corner was specially designed for the young artists to try out their creative ability in drawing pictures that were related to the theme of the Carnival. Over 100 pictures were collected after the activity. The Narcotics Bureau booths included display cases showing various samples of dangerous drugs prevalent in Hong Kong and associated drug abuse equipment. Also on show were photographs of interesting drug smuggling concealment methods and photographs depicting the serious health dangers posed by drug abuse. The performances given by the two PDU drug detector dogs fascinated the guests and won much applause. Chief Superintendent (Staff Relations & Conditions of Service) Mr Cheung Siu-wah noted that the success of the 'Anti-Drugs Carnival 2003' would not have been possible without the wholehearted support rendered by the various organisations and units. He wished to extend his gratitude to the Police Staff Associations, and all the participating departments, organisations and the Force Volunteer Groups. They had all made valuable contributions to the success of the Carnival.
