The Commissioner, Mr Tsang Yam-pui, said that "Police Magazine", the Force's weekly beat crime television programme, would continue to excel in arousing public awareness of crime prevention and making Hong Kong one of the safest cities in the world.

He was speaking at a ceremony held at RTHK on October 16 to mark the programme's 30th anniversary.

Mr Tsang pointed out that for many years, the programme had been unceasingly disseminating beat crime messages to the public and educating citizens on their responsibilities of preventing crime, becoming one of the most popular and long running TV programmes in town.

The programme had undergone transformations and improvements in terms of contents, audio-visual effects and new technology. As a result, it had become more attractive to viewers, and more effective in driving home the messages of beating and preventing crime, as well as in strengthening co-operation between the community and the Force, he noted.

"I'm glad that on the occasion of the programme's 30th anniversary, new and innovative elements continue to be brought in to further enrich its contents, such as a new theme song, a quiz with prizes, cross-boundary crime modus operandi and crime prevention education," he added.

Later, Mr Tsang and the Director of Broadcasting, Mr Chu Pui-hing, presented certificates of appreciation to 25 former hosts of the programme.

During the ceremony, each of the former hosts recounted their "unique and valuable experience and happy memories" about his or her association with "Police Magazine". Among them is the first host of the five-minute "Police 5" programme, former Senior Inspector Mr Wong Shiu-bun.

"Police Magazine" was launched only as a five-minute black-and-white programme in 1973 to enlist public support and assistance for fighting crime and other related cases, such as missing persons. It has progressed to become a 30-minute full-colour production, and has scored the 9th place in the 2003 Television Programme Appreciation Index (Second Quarter) Survey among 96 programmes.
