Judicial Studies Board visits PTU HQ |

The Police Tactical Unit Headquarters (PTU HQ) played host in mid-October to a District Court Judge, four Magistrates and a Special Magistrate, who are members of the Judicial Studies Board (JSB). The JSB was set up in 1988 to provide training and development to Judges and Judicial Officers with various activities, including lectures, seminars and visits to the disciplined services. The visit commenced with a multi-media presentation to introduce, among others, the history, structure and roles of the PTU, followed by an explanation of how PTU officers are trained to plan for and handle public order events. Following this, Senior Inspector Mr Ken Lam introduced some recent developments at PTU that emphasised not only on refinements made to the Force options available to PTU officers but also efforts to improve PTU uniform and equipment, such as helmets and boots. The visit concluded with a demonstration by officers of the PTU Foxtrot Company on handling of a public order event. The demonstration combined all the event elements, ranging from an initial incident of passive resistance that blocked the route of a VIP, to a fully blown anti-globalisation protest. During the demonstration, Senior Inspector, Mr James Ma treated the visitors to a demonstration of police tactics to defeat locking devices such as "sleeping dragons" and D-locks. They were most impressed by PTU HQ's efforts in developing these tactics over the years through research and overseas liaison. At the end of the visit, the delegation thanked the PTU Commandant, Mr Au Hok-lam, for providing an opportunity for them to gain an insight into the work that goes into making a PTU officer.
