Police Boxing Club makes history |

The Police Boxing Club staged the first Police Force Boxing Championships in front of some 250 spectators at the Police Officers' Club (POC) on December 12, marking a milestone in the history of boxing in the Force. The event was the usual rip-roaring success, with a night of great boxing presided over by Deputy Commissioner (Management), Mr Fung Siu-yuen, as the guest of honour. In the first ladies contest ever staged by the Police Boxing Club, WSIP Tsang Chiu-tong of Criminal Intelligence Bureau used her powerful jab to unsettle the more experienced WPC Kan Man-chi of Kowloon West Emergency Unit, running out a clear winner after three exciting rounds, and claiming the Pin Weight title of the Force. In the Bantamweight Division, the experienced and cagey SIP Mark Mak Man-yiu from VIP Protection Unit, went up against stylish newcomer, PC Wong Yuk-po of Airport Security Unit (ASU). Both fighters put on a great show, with Mark having to put on a masterful display of bobbing and weaving to keep out of the way of the flashing fists of the ASU fighter. In the end, with the very effective counter-attacking Mark clinched the title and also the coveted "Blaine Hoggard Trophy" for the "Best Fighter of the Night". In the headline bout, for the Light Middleweight Championship of the Force, old crowd favourite SP Barry John Smith of New Territories North Emergency Unit was matched against the younger and fitter SIP Simon Southgate of ASU. This was another tremendously exciting encounter with the gutsy Southgate going all out from the opening bell. Barry was able to weather the storm however, and using his ring craft and a string of lovely left, right combinations, carved out a close decision over a very worthy adversary. The crowd showed their huge appreciation to both pugilists at the end of the fight, and at the age of 42, Barry becomes the oldest reigning Boxing Champion in the Force. The Police Boxing Championships are set now to become an annual fixture at the POC, which will be held every December. If you are a Boxer and wish to compete in this competition, please send an email to either dvc-yldiv or sp-eu-ntn.
