e-Learning has risen dramatically in popularity in the last few years and is tipped to be the next most popular learning and development mode, said Assistant Commissioner (Training) David Thomas during an interview with the Civil Service Training and Development Institute of the Civil Service Bureau (CSTDI/CSB). "At this day and age of the knowledge economy, it is essential that our officers capture the most up-to-date knowledge and information through lifelong learning. e-Learning will be the most handy tool in doing that," Mr Thomas added. Benefits of e-learning JUST-IN-TIME - e-Learning offers the unparallel advantage of anytime and anywhere flexibility. All you need is a desktop (or laptop) and Internet connection and you can learn as and when you need it. JUST FOR YOU - Web courses have built-in features like topic index, course map, learning track, and online pre-assessment. You can easily customise your learning by spending as much or as little time as you need on a selected topic. JUST AS IT IS - Technology has enabled the simulation of tools and equipment, environments and even complex situations. Online learners can then learn how to use sophisticated equipment, monitor complex operations or even handle difficult customer situations - safe in the knowledge that they can learn from their mistakes without the high prices they have to pay in real life. Cyber Learning Centre Plus (CLC Plus) The Cyber Learning Centre Plus is a learning portal that provides one-stop access to nearly 100 web courses and 60 job aids on subjects related to language, management, China, knowledge of the civil service or IT. Membership is free and open to all government officers. DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC RESOURCES - The Force is one of the first departments to put department-specific resources on the CLC Plus. Some of these materials are open to all civil servants while others are available to members of the Force only. Among these are videos of some seminars. LEADERS' CORNER - You can find a wealth of information that relates to leadership, public management, management, and executive health. Executive Programmes provide updated information on the programmes of CSTDI/CSB and overseas institutes, and present summaries and video clips of seminars for senior managers. WEB COURSES - Web courses are available on management, IT, English and Chinese, and the Government. The latest additions include Streaming Speech, an advanced course on speech and pronunciation as well as "Change Management - turning crises into opportunities", a course on Dr Wong Chung kwong's I-CAN model of stress management. JOB AIDS - Job aids provide just-in-time information for different work situations. In the category "e-Reference", you can find many communication tips and IT tips. Booking Summaries Online enables you to master with ease the learning from popular books through a 10-page summary. Under "e-Tools" you can access online dictionaries, glossaries of HRD and IT terms as well as templates of official writing in both Chinese and English. CHINA UPDATE - Here is a one-stop resource on the Mainland. In addition to information on provinces and major cities, you will find useful information on the political, economic, educational, public health and civil service structures of the Mainland. Promotion activities Training Wing has been co-operating with CSTDI/CSB to organise a series of activities to promote e-Learning, including briefing sessions for Training and Staff Relations Officers this month. The upcoming promotion activities are as follows: * A briefing in mid-June for trainees of Police Training School. * A road show at the Police Sports and Recreation Club on July 17 and 18. * Promotional booths set up at various Regional Headquarters after July.
