Community support essential to maintaining law and order | ||
The Secretary for Security, Ambrose S. K. Lee, speaking at a passing-out parade at the Police Training School (PTS) on May 22, said the understanding and support of society at large was a critical element to ensure law and order.
"Law enforcement is never an easy task. The disciplined services, especially frontline colleagues, must act lawfully and reasonably in ensuring law and order.
"They must achieve a balance between expectations of society and enforcement efficiency," he added.
Mr Lee pointed out that as an international financial centre, Hong Kong's development was closely knit with important developments in the security, economic and social fronts elsewhere in the world.
"While I am glad that Hong Kong has a relatively low risk of being targeted by terrorists, we can never afford to be complacent. We must not let anyone exploit our openness and freedoms; we must not let anyone hijack our safety and stability," he noted.
Mr Lee was confident that the graduates passing out from PTS, "the future proponents of the fine traditions of the Hong Kong Police Force", would be contributing to the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong.
"The professional training you receive today is your best mate for the challenges of tomorrow," he told the graduates.
