Invited by the Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data (PCO), Chief Inspector (Force Data & Access to Information Coordination) Armen Lau Kit-man, and Woman Chief Inspector (Intelligence, Commercial Crime Bureau) Gloria Yu Yin-ching attended the Data Protection Officers' Club Meeting 2004 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre last month to discuss identity theft.

"The Data Protection Officers' Club, organised by the PCO, is a gateway to an extensive network of professionals tasked with the responsibility of implementing and co-ordinating measures to protect personal data privacy in Hong Kong," CIP Lau told OffBeat. "It provides a channel for two-way communication between the PCO and data protection officers from a broad range of organisations."

A member of the Data Protection Officers' Club, CIP Lau said the club meets regularly to discuss relevant topical issues, and provides an useful platform for sharing of personal data protection. "This time, we have made use of the meeting to enhance public awareness of identity theft," he added.

Nearly 200 data protection officers have attended the meeting, the biggest attendance ever organised by the PCO. CIP Lau said the event was successful and very well received by all members.

During the meeting, WCIP Yu outlined the prevalent trend of identity theft, case studies on culprits' modus operandi and personal data protection measures against identity theft.
